How Can I Become an Egg Donor? blog featured imageDonating eggs is a noble and selfless act. Through your donation, you can help someone else complete their family and experience parenthood. Unfortunately, egg donation is not a quick process, which can make you feel hesitant. It’s important for you to gain a thorough understanding of the process to eliminate any uncertainty. In this blog, we discuss how you can become an egg donor, who is eligible to apply, and the process of actually donating your eggs.

What is Egg Donation? Do You Get Paid?

Egg donation is an assisted reproductive technology through which a healthy, fertile woman donates her eggs to an egg bank or a fertility clinic to help other women conceive. Women who cannot conceive with their own eggs can choose to do IVF using donor eggs.

The eggs are fertilized with sperm from a donor or a male partner, and the resulting embryo is placed in the uterus of the donor egg recipient. In India, egg donation is strictly altruistic and donors are not paid for their eggs.

Who Is Eligible To Become an Egg Donor?

Anyone can choose to become an egg donor, as long as they meet the eligibility mentioned in the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) Regulation Act 2021:

  • You must be between 23 and 35 years of age
  • You must be ever-married (married or divorced)
  • You must have at least one biological child who is at least 3 years old
  • You must be in good physical and mental health
  • You must be free of any sexually-transmitted diseases
  • You must have no family history of genetic conditions
  • You must be at a healthy weight
  • You must have never donated eggs before

How Can I Become an Egg Donor?

The process of egg donation is slightly complex and time-consuming. However, your doctors will guide you through the process and help you stay prepared for the next stage.

Step 1

You must visit a fertility clinic or an egg bank and express your desire to become an egg donor. The specialist there will explain the entire process to you and inform you of any possible risks or complications.

Step 2

Once you’ve been accepted as an egg donor, you’ll have to undergo a series of tests to check your ovarian reserve and to rule out any infectious diseases like hepatitis B and C. You will also have to submit your personal and family medical history.

Step 3

You will sign a contract giving your consent for participating in the clinic’s egg donation program. Then, once you have matched with a recipient, the clinic will begin preparing you for the egg retrieval.

Step 4

You will begin ovarian stimulation protocols, which will aim to increase the number of mature eggs your body produces through injectable fertility drugs. Once your follicles have reached the right size, you will be given a shot of hCG, which will trigger ovulation.

Step 5

Your egg retrieval will usually be scheduled 10-12 days after you begin ovarian stimulation. You will be sedated during the procedure and an embryologist will collect your eggs by guiding a thin, ultrasound-guided needle into your ovaries. You will be able to go home the same day, and we recommend asking someone to pick you up from the clinic.

You’ve Donated Your Eggs. What’s Next?

Post-retrieval, you may experience some side effects from the major hormonal changes your body has experienced. Side effects of donating eggs may include cramping, bloating, and spotting (minor bleeding). If you experience any alarming symptoms, get in touch with your doctor at once.

You will be able to resume regular activities just a day or two after your retrieval. You will also be compensated for any reasonable medical or travel expenses.
