Egg donation helps couples face their fertility struggles head-on and get the chance to complete their family. If you’re interested in becoming an egg donor, it’s only natural that you may want to learn more about the egg donation process. This might involve learning about its effect on your body. And the more you learn about it, the more you may wonder, ‘Is donating eggs painful? Or is pain during egg donation just a myth?’
One of the major concerns around donating eggs is, ‘What if it’s really painful?’ Many women who might be interested in donating eggs might feel deterred by any possible pain or side effects they could face during it. After all, no one wants to put their body (and their health) in harm’s way.
Donating eggs being painful is a very popular myth about egg donation. At Corion Fertility Clinic, we’ve carried out the egg donation process hundreds of times. Our patients agree that though egg donation can be uncomfortable, it almost never causes pain. At most, you may have to deal with side effects that may cause discomfort after the procedure.
Egg donation is a simple procedure that takes place in three phases. The first phase is the screening process. The egg donor is first given a thorough physical examination and is tested for various genetic and communicable diseases. She is also given a mental health evaluation and tests to examine her fertility.
Once the clinic has confirmed her reproductive health and mental and physical well-being, we’ll move on to the more intensive stages of the process: ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. Here is how they work, as well as an overview of the level of pain or discomfort you may experience at each stage.
You are given fertility shots every day for a week or two. These shots stimulate your ovaries into producing multiple mature eggs during ovulation, instead of just one. All these injections are not painful, as the needles are quite thin. They may sometimes cause minor bruising at the injection site.
Since these injection shots contain the same hormones that cause PMS symptoms like mood swings, bloating, and cramping, you may experience some of the same symptoms after ovarian stimulation. At the end of this phase, you are given a trigger shot of hCG to induce ovulation.
To retrieve the mature eggs from your ovaries, a specialist carefully inserts a thin syringe into each of your follicles (fluid-filled sacs in your ovaries) and extracts the fluid from them. Then, an embryologist separates the eggs from the fluid.
Is donating eggs painful, then? Feeling a syringe inside your ovaries sounds like it would surely hurt! Don’t worry, you will be sedated during the actual egg retrieval. This ensures that the entire procedure is completely pain-free.
Immediately after the egg retrieval, you may experience light cramping or soreness. The clinic follows up with you and monitors your condition. You are advised not to drive yourself home and to have a friend pick you up from the clinic. Avoid sexual activity for a while after your retrieval and follow your doctor’s advice for a smooth recovery. Most women make a full recovery in just a day or two.
Egg retrieval does not pose any long-term health risks. Recovery does not last more than a week or two at most. Most donors are monitored very carefully to prevent the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which is the only major risk you can face.
The chances of you developing OHSS are extremely low; however, any reputable fertility clinic will regularly monitor you for symptoms and adjust your protocols to prevent it.
Egg donation in India has helped many couples who were not able to have children even with fertility treatments like IVF and IUI. Such couples may be drawn to using donor eggs as a last resort. Isn’t it wonderful that they are able to conceive a child despite the odds being against them?
Egg donation is truly one of the miracles of modern science that has improved the reproductive potential of not just India but the world. Donate your eggs to help someone complete their family. Book a consultation at Corion Fertility Clinic today.
